Today, more than ever, I noticed the impact of generational gaps between co-workers.
In her article Older Workers vs. Younger Workers, Mary Gormandy White discussed the affects of having older employees within an organization which included better attendance records, better customer service, and are loyal, reliable, and dependable.
I paused when I read the article because nowhere does it talk about how best to foster an environment for the employees interact with each other when in some cases there is a significant age gap between them. In an ideal work such concerns would not be present but we don’t live in an ideal world.
Dan Woog in What Older Workers and Younger Workers Can Learn from Each Other examined what older and younger employees teach each other based on their different experiences.
Firstly, older workers can teach younger workers how to handle hard Times, develop loyalty, and interpersonal Skills. On the other hand younger workers can teach older workers how to use new technology, embrace diversity, and risk Taking.
Since this issue will only become more important as time goes on, I believe creating an environment that utilizes the two groups experiences would prove to be a good long term strategy.
